The Association Jacques Bergier does appreciate your orbituary article on Christian Bourgois; it is very precise compared to the articles published in French.
We would highly appreciate knowing how Christian Bourgois obtained the copyrights to publish JRR Tolkien’s book in French. Was it directly obtained from Professor Tolkien, or through his literary agent, and whom?
Jacques Bergier, a French scientist and member of the Resistance Movement , wrote a book titled “Admirations”, published by Chritian Bourgois. In his chapter dedicated to The Lord of the Rings, Bergier strongly expressed regret that Tolkien’s trilogy was not yet translated in French in the following words: “It will be probably necessary that Professeur JJR Tolkien, from Oxofrd, be awarded the Nobel Price to lead the French public to discover the extraordinary quality of his works and his genius”. Of the ten wonderful authors presented by Bergier, only Professor Tolkien answered to Christian Bourgois. And it lead to the French translation of The Lord of the Rings… in 1972.
